What is Habits of Mind?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Habits of MindTM<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0is about knowing how to behave intelligently and respond effectively to uncertainty or dilemmas. Developed by\u00a0Dr Arthur Costa, Emeritus Professor of Education at California State University<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>Sacramento, and\u00a0Co-Director of the Institute for Intelligent Behavior in El Dorado Hills, California<\/strong>, this framework provides children of all ages a set of intelligent thinking dispositions for autonomous learning, critical thinking and effective inquiry.<\/p>

Just as how influential people like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg demonstrates positive traits like persistence and innovation, we too want our children to draw upon these positive ways of thinking that help them be more confident when confronted with difficulties. They will be able to ask good questions and become skilled at interacting with diverse groups of people. These habits also instill positive personality traits and behaviour in children to cultivate essential skills like strategic reasoning, insightfulness, perseverance and creativity, applying what they have learnt to an ever-expanding array of challenges not only in academic subjects but also in their lives, communities, and the world.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Format Teaching<\/h5>
Every month, teachers at Li'lberry formally introduce a new habit during specially-designed lessons. Children will have opportunities to explore the meaning of the habit through engaging activities and emulate positive actions in accordance to the habit. Reinforcements<\/h5>
Habits need to be reinforced repeatedly. Li'lberry teachers do so by consistently revisiting the habit throughout the term. We work closely with parents to provide them with updates on their child\u2019s progress in exemplifying Habits of Mind\u2122 in their day-to-day activities, alongside regular developmental updates. Environment<\/h5>
Habits of Mind\u2122 posters abound in every Li'lberry preschool as we meticulously craft the environment for successful planting of the Habits of Mind\u2122 seeds. \u201cI can\u2019t draw.\u201d \u201cI can\u2019t sing!\u201d Some people think that creativity is innate and they can never gain that artistic flair. Yet, research has increasingly shown that children have the ability to produce original, novel, intelligent solutions and strategies if that capacity is nurtured. Persisting<\/h5>
When posed with challenges, efficient problem solvers persevere even when a solution is not immediately apparent because they employ a wide variety of problem-solving strategies. Children often give up saying, \u201cIt\u2019s too hard!\u201d or \u201cI can\u2019t do this!\u201d when faced with a problem.
